URBAN ARIAS: POSITIONS 1956 WORKSHOP

Wed March 21 / 7:30pm
Ballroom

Followed by Q&A with composer Conrad Cummings and Tony-award nominated librettist Michael Korie

Join mini-modern opera and Artisphere resident company UrbanArias for a public read/workshop of Positions 1956, a 90-minute opera in three parts created by composer Conrad Cummings and Tony-award nominated librettist Michael Korie (Grey Gardens). Positions 1956 is UrbanArias’ first commission, first world premiere and will have its performance debut at Artisphere in April as part of its festival season. Both scathingly funny and heart-breakingly bittersweet, the opera is based on a different type of instructional material from the 1950s: a fitness manual (think Charles Atlas, 98-pound weaklings, and titles like “Physique and Delinquency”); a ballroom dancing manual (think Arthur Murray’s famous “Footprints”); and a sex manual (think titles like “How to Please Your Husband”).
