DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE: =0D=0AWhat makes an object usef=
ul, engaging and beautiful? What is it about a distinct design that co=
nveys calm, wonder and excitement in the user and helps us recall a mo=
ment in time? Artisphere and Apartment Zero have teamed up to present =
the Washington, DC International Design Festival, a free three-month l=
ong multi-disciplinary celebration of design, featuring the exhibition=
The Next Wave: Industrial Design Innovation in the 21st Century, cura=
ted and produced by Apartment Zero co-owner Douglas Burton. The Next=
Wave is&nbsp\;a 4,000 square foot exhibition exploring innovation in =
product design from Spain, Italy, Belgium, the U.K., Scandinavia and t=
he United States spanning the last 13 years. Featuring one-offs, proto=
types and pieces in production concentrating on the areas of eco-frien=
dly design, functionality and minimalism,&nbsp\;the conceptual and the=
avant-garde, over 100 objects will be on view, ranging from&nbsp\;lig=
hting, furniture, textile, and product, to electronics, housewares, to=
ols and interactive design. The Next Wave allows the viewer to exper=
ience objects that are works of art in themselves, each project sparki=
ng a new dialogue and diffusing preconceived notions of design&nbsp\;v=
ersus art and&nbsp\;beauty&nbsp\;versus function, while still capturin=
g the spirit of the times. An idea can be so simple that it is condens=
ed and concentrated into its most basic parts. This is The Next Wave. =0D=0=
AThe Washington, DC International Design Festival will also feature a =
series of free public programs including lectures, film, video and pho=
to competition. A&nbsp\;small retail shop will also accompany the fest=
ival, where certain items from The Next Wave can be purchased.&nbsp\; =
