This supervisory position will serve as Program Director of Artisphere, Arlington's new 62,000 sq. ft. cultural center opened in October 2010. Artisphere offers a wide range of arts programs including visual arts, music, dance, news media and theater. The venue includes three theaters, a ballroom, three galleries, a two-story video wall and wireless "town hall."
This position, which reports to the Artisphere Executive Director, will have overall responsibility for arts programming at Artisphere, planning a year-round calendar of over 120 performances, exhibits, and activities. The employee will negotiate contracts, develop and manage a $500,000 budget, and manage relationships with partner organizations. The employee will coordinate a staff of four, including an Arts Programmer, Visual Arts Curator, News Media Curator and Education Coordinator The work performed is extremely varied and subject to firm deadlines, requiring the ability to balance staffing, operational and budgetary concerns.
Specific duties include:
• Develop the vision for the programmatic direction of arts activities presented by Artisphere;
• Program approximately 120 events of all types annually;
• Identify, evaluate, and contract appropriate performing and visual arts content for presentation;
• Develop and implement systems and procedures for evaluating artistic submissions and scheduling performance spaces;
• Develop and manage budget for program components;
• Analyze ticket pricing scales and expected sales to assess income earning potential in relation to budget projections;
• Work with Executive Director and Communications/Marketing Director to position the center effectively for sponsorship and marketing initiatives;
• Train and supervise assigned staff;
• Represent the programming team in outreach to community organizations and audience members;
• Stay abreast of and continually assess current trends in arts programming and presenting;
• Cultivate and maintain relationships with a national network of arts presenters, programmers and organizations;
• Guide and work with programming team to ensure all programs create a cohesive complement, and
• Work collaboratively with all department heads to advance shows, ensure open communication and produce quality, smooth program operation.
The ideal candidate will have 5 or more years of experience in a managerial position of a public arts venue.
Selection Criteria:

Minimum: Bachelors degree in an art related field, and three years of progressively responsible work experience in a managerial position of a public arts venue that has included coordinating the work of others, and performing liaison and negotiating activities with a variety of groups representing multiple artistic disciplines.
Substitution: Experience above the minimum can be substituted on a year or year basis for the education requirement. A Master's Degree in Arts Administration, or related field may be substituted for one year of experience.
Desirable experience:
a) Developing year-round arts programming;
b) Programming for a broad spectrum of art disciplines;
c) Producing and/or managing arts and cultural facilities, events and/or projects;
d) Developing and managing budgets of at least $250,000;
e) Supervising staff involved in arts and cultural facilities;
f) Experience with box office operations, sales and reconciliations;
g)
Establishing relationships with agents, art presenters as well as with
Embassies and/or other art presenting organizations, and
h) Contract negotiations.
ARTS AMBASSADOR
Salary Range: $13.43 - $15.12 Hourly
Work Location: 1101 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington *METRO-accessible*
Artisphere seeks creative and energetic Arts Center Ambassadors. These part time/temporary positions will perform a variety of duties to ensure the smooth operation of daily events at Artisphere, serve as ambassadors to the public, act as information specialists and provide administrative support as needed.
Specific duties include:
- Welcome and direct patrons and guests to Artisphere
- Provide patrons of Artipshere information on current and upcoming programming, in person and via telephone.
- Perform sales and assist patrons in retail store.
- Sell tickets and perform general box office duties for Artisphere events and performances.
- Supervise and perform sales of artwork on display in Artisphere’s galleries.
- Manage/coordinate event volunteers as necessary.
- Function as usher as necessary.
- Function as a house manager as necessary.
- Function as tour guide as necessary.
- Assist in the set up and break down of Artisphere events and performances
- General housekeeping
- Ensure patrons enjoy a clean, safe environment.
- Other duties may include administrative work, assisting with communications and marketing, special projects, disseminating box office information and tracking sales activity.
- There may be opportunities for Manager On Duty positions – managing the floor of the space, and opening and closing the facility depending on an applicant’s qualifications.
Qualification Requirements:
- High School graduate or equivalent is required.
- BA in Arts or similar field, creative background encouraged but not essential.
- Previous experience working directly with the public preferred
- Experience handling cash preferred
- Ability to safely lift and carry 30 lbs.
- Open availability and flexibility to work nights, weekends, openings and closings, to meet the needs of the facility’s hours of operation.

ART INSTALLER
The Art Installer (Theater Tech II – Installation Tech) will perform a variety of duties to ensure the smooth operation of the visual arts display areas at Artisphere,. This position specifically provides technical assistance in the galleries of Artisphere in the area of art installation and gallery maintenance.
Specific Duties:
- Partner with both in-house and outside curators for preparation and planning of exhibition installation.
- Installation and de-installation of a variety of works of art, in all media, for up to 30 exhibits per year.
- Maintain inventory and storage of works of art on display.
- Maintain inventory of installation supplies and tools.
- Participate in and/or manage process for drop off/ pick up of art work for juried exhibitions, special exhibitions, and site-specific installations.
- Complete condition reports on all works of art received and shipped
- Assist in the training of volunteers and interns in gallery procedures.
- Assist in maintaining the appearance of exhibition space including dusting, sweeping, cleaning of plexi, paint touch-up, as well as care and cleaning of miscellaneous exhibition furniture.
- Assist in maintaining ongoing exhibitions with works of art that may require daily examination, repair and maintenance.
- As needed, consult with curator and artist on most appropriate method of maintenance.
- Collect, organize and present data for price sheets and labels for exhibition.
- Assist with the installation/deinstallation of stationary and new-media based donor/sponsor initiatives.
Requirements:
- Excellent planning and organizational skills.
- Ability to read floor plans specifications and diagrams.
- Familiarity with the use of power tools.
- Skills in patching and painting walls.
- Familiarity with PC or Mac computer systems and software.
- Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Must understand proper handling of fine artwork of a variety of mediums, including digital media and the installation of video / electrical equipment.
- Must be able to work weekend including early or late hours when Artisphere is not open to the public.
